Ingredients in the spotlight: TPP (Triphenyl Phosphate), Tetrahydrofurfuryl Methacrylate
What is changing for nail polish, semi-permanent nail polish and gels under the new EU bans? The European Union is once again changing the rules for a much-loved beauty category: nail polish. Some ingredients have already been banned, while others will be banned during 2027–2028.
Nail polish is the category that has undergone the most changes in recent years. Nail products, particularly semi-permanent nail polish and gels, are affected by successive changes. These changes stem from new scientific evidence and the reassessment of the safety of specific ingredients, with the aim of protecting consumers and professionals.
Ingredients affected by changes to the rules for nail products:

Exposure to triphenyl phosphate (TPP or TPhP) from nail products raises health concerns. According to California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), the primary route of exposure is skin contact, while there is also evidence of transfer through the placenta and breast milk.
Toxicological assessments identify concerns about potential effects on the liver, endocrine and nervous systems, as well as on development and reproduction.
Particular attention should be paid to occupational exposure among nail salon workers.
Nail polishes already on store shelves may continue to be sold until 1 July 2028. Many brands have already removed TPP and indicate this on their labels using claims such as “10-free”.
Tetrahydrofurfuryl Methacrylate raises concerns about potential effects on reproduction. Under Regulation (EU) 2025/1222, it is classified as toxic to reproduction, Category 1B.
As a general rule, EU legislation prohibits the use of such substances in cosmetics unless specific conditions for an exemption are met. Professional use does not exempt a product from these rules.
Businesses and professionals using nail products containing this ingredient should contact their suppliers in good time for information on the necessary changes and available alternatives.
